The Power of the Dog

The Power of the Dog ★★★★½

Campion has not lost her touch whatsoever. Still at the top of her game, this film is as painterly and cinematically eloquent as it gets. Much like Herzog, she doesn’t really have a visually distinct style, but the moment the characters begin talking and the plot kicks up, it’s so clearly her thing. Truly one of the greats, directing in the tradition of artists like Sydney Pollack. The camera is 100% motivated or it’s not present. The ultimate filmmaking philosophy.

I forgot Benedict Cumberbatch existed for two hours. His presence here is insane. I mean, INSANE.

Would be a five but there’s a super studio moment at the end that was definitely not in the original script and it really pulled me out for a sec.
