Caleb Jara’s review published on Letterboxd:
What a great way to start my movie year, yes, Promising young woman was the first movie I saw in 2021, and it was electrifying.
I started to watch this at 2:00 AM, which probably wasn’t the best idea, cause by the end, I was extremely disturbed and with tachycardia; it is kind of incredible that in this modern day and age this film still feels urgent, the message it manages to convey is heartbreaking.
How can I begin to describe this movie’s genius, Let’s start off with Emerald Fennell, who is a literal genius, everything about this film feels very meticulous, from the dialogue, to the visuals, to the angles, you can tell Fennell thought about everything, Carey Mulligan is also perfect, and manages to hit every singular note this character requires her to, having seen Kirby’s and Viola’s performance, Mulligan is my favorite to win the Oscar. This film should also be the front runner for every ensemble award too, everyone gives it their all, I can’t name highlights, because they all were literal highlights.
Promising Young Woman, is necessary, urgent and brave, a certain character’s last scream will forever be engraved in my brain, and so will this film.
