Becoming Cousteau

Becoming Cousteau ★★★

I can remember watching "The Undersea World with Jacques Cousteau" as a kid. It wasn't a regularly scheduled program. You would just run across it randomly, usually on a Saturday afternoon. The program was fascinating to me. The exotic locations, strange undersea lifeforms, and the scientific facts along with Cousteau's sing song narration combined to make a great program.

The documentary tells the life of its subject in a traditional manner. Director Liz Garbus uses the vast amount of archival footage available combined with audio clips, readings of Cousteau's diary, and a beautiful score to tell the story. While it never soars, the film does a credible job presenting its subject.
