The Card Counter

Schrader continues his crusade against self-punishment. The metaphor of “self-torture” is stretched paper-thin here, but this time God’s Lonely Man doesn’t exactly have redemption on the mind. He is not heading for, but slowly sinking into martyrdom.

This is made by a man who used to write with a .38 on his desk (and a brass crown of thorns on his head), where his cure for writers block would be to stick the gun in his mouth. You can see Travis Bickle in this anecdote. You can see Mishima. And you can see the extreme Russian Roulette that is Isaac’s William Tell (it’s in the name). Christ suffered… maybe so that we don’t have to.

Side note: really hope someone takes this for some lighthearted tiffany haddish poker movie and goes and sees this blind and is just traumatised. also seeing that Pickpocket ending but with her acrylic nails just freeze framed for so long is hilarious. wild ending fr fr
