Brain Damage

Brain Damage

Bless VHS box art.

This R-Rated horror trash's playful, fun design helped me weasel a rental out of my poor trusting mother when I was around 5-6. It's the story of how a young man's life spirals out of control when he one day awakes with a parasitic talking creature(who sounds very much like Bing Crosby) on his neck... named Aylmer. The creature injects a persons brain with "juice" which causes an acid trip-esque euphoric state of pleasure, but starts to kill you when you withdrawal. He'll juice you as much as you like... as long you supply a steady meal of human brains.

Revisiting this movie more than 20 years later, I feel like this may have been the D.A.R.E. program that works. As a kid, the cheesy but disturbing drug sequences and awkwardly long cuts in this movie wigged me out. It hammers the idea that as fun as drugs and hallucinating can be, it'll ultimately alienate you from friends and family, make you do things you don't want, and cause your head to shoot light from it. Preach.
It's an awful movie, but it had a message... where it was missing a script, budget and talent. Isn't that really what it's all about? ISN'T IT?!?! Naw.

There's also a cameo from Basket Case. Yup.

We watched the new Arrow remastered release which made every terrible set piece, prop, and lighting choice look incredible. Arrow's dedication to cleaning up some these garbage bin classics are impressive as hell and I can't wait to see what they release next.
