Bumming in Beijing: The Last Dreamers

Bumming in Beijing: The Last Dreamers ★★★★½

Second time around, this film is much better than I remember. The line between performance and authenticity is subtly yet undoubtably being played with. All the paradoxes of being a mad artist — resisting money but needing money, blubbering gibberish but also being the wisest in the room, hating pretension but being its epitome — becomes entangled in more national scale paradoxes.... an utterly beautiful thought piece, a rare documentation of chinese independent artists in the 1990s.
