I watched this regularly as a kid because my dad and sister loved it, so I’m probably being ridiculous with five stars, but this movie is loads of fun, even on a weekday evening in 2021. The (perfect, hilarious, delicious) twist simply would not have worked with anyone other than Shirley MacLaine in that habit. And Ennio Morricone’s score is… mule comedy.
Based on the trailer I thought Candice Bergen would be the MVP but once it started I quickly realized Dianne Wiest was actually the MVP only to watch her become co-MVP alongside Gemma Chan but then, oops, three quarters of the way through I realized Meryl Streep had been the true MVP all along and isn’t that just so sinister of her?
I almost got up and went into the kitchen during the final scene when the music *really* swelled because I was so embarrassed for everyone involved that I wanted to distract myself by doing the dishes. The most satisfying thing about this movie was looking up everything that made me think “there’s no way that happened” and being right.
