Blaze Amaze’s review published on Letterboxd:
Would’ve been the most epic movie of 2003 if it wasn’t for Lord of the Rings: Return of the king
The Last Samurai is a semi-compelling and gorgeously shot political war drama that is let down by Tom Cruise and the typical white savior narrative structure, but elevated by Ken Watanabe’s breakthrough performance and some exceptional battle scenes. There’s not much to say other than that, but despite this being a two-and-a-half hour long movie, it breezes by relatively quick, but fails to make enough of an impression to warrant anything other than a moderate recommendation. At the end of the day, you don’t need to watch The Last Samurai.
