Incredible. A wickedly clever, absurdist psychosexual art film as a kaleidoscopic vision of religion, trauma, love, sex, adolescent angst and cross-dressing vampires. Weaving such a gloriously coherent tapestry out of all this insanity and perversion—choreographed to Beethoven’s 7th and Ravel’s Boléro, no less—should be impossible and yet Sono does exactly that with an almost effortless cadence. An instant favourite, four hours is much too short.
