  • Spider-Man

    Spider-Man

    ★★★★½

I don't know if I'm merely projecting because modern superhero movies have immunised me to their constant barrage of quippy, self-referential winks to the audience; the affixes to every expository scene with too much Comic Weirdness in it that lends levity in a way that reeks of zero confidence. The MCU machine is a juggernaut of Brand and Capital, but it's so embarrassed of itself. Anyway it's nice to see this and find the whole thing like, endearing and earnest,…

  • Beyond

    Beyond

    ★★★★½

Dreams are impossible to recapture - lightning in a bottle experiences of haywire brain synapses firing in haphazard directions, creating uncanny imagery that you simply can't recall or recount without losing the sauce that made it the hallucination it was.

Beyond is one of the best shorts in the Animatrix, one that I saw when I was like 8 or something and could only recall drips and drabs of; minuscule scenes out of sequence and out of key, memories so…

  • Belly

    Belly

    ★★★★½

Wasn't expecting 90's hood Giallo, but it delivered. Such beguiling command of light and sound that the otherwise patchy narrative is easy to gloss over. Captivating and kaleidoscopic from front to back. Belly full. Rest in peace DMX.

  • The Mighty Gambler

    The Mighty Gambler

    ★★★★½

When a game of poker ends in all parties holding a full hand of fifty Aces, the heavens open and the Slow Motion Blue Suit Gang wage an earth-shattering battle of the drip with the Unlimited Ammo Max Payne 2 Brown Suits. Will u choose the path of law, chaos, or forge your own destiny;- take ur huge shirt off.
So insane I nearly cried. So raw I nearly died. If you've ever seen cards dealt this slick (like staring in2 a blast furnace) I'll raise you two billion, and this game was frigged from the start.

  • Despiser

    Despiser

    ★★★★½

    AC-DC. 1980.

  • Super Mario Bros.

    Super Mario Bros.

    ★★★★½

Not sure why people pissed and moaned for years about this not being a faithful adaptation of SMB when this has more personality than all of the games combined. Bob-ombs wear Reebok.

  • My Neighbor Totoro

    My Neighbor Totoro

    ★★★★½

Totoro helping the kids spawn a new tree in seconds, sprawling in size and seemingly ancient in stature, right beside their home, as if it was built with the tree in mind. If the movie hung on the final frame of that scene for a moment longer, I'd probably have broken down.
My Neighbor Totoro is teaming with adoration for the spirit of youth, optimism for humanity's place in nature, and makes sure the flames of imagination keep burning. The…

  • Donnie Darko

    Donnie Darko

    ★★★★½

hey, have you guys ever seen donnie darko?

Surprisingly fun on a rewatch a decade in the making! An exposé into conspiracy theorists' patterns and how they often twist events while distorting facts to reaffirm delusions. Donnie is our psychologically unwell protagonist portrayed as being charmingly atypical one moment and then in the next, possessed by attempting to make sense of the strange occurrences he perceives around himself. It's a sobering look into what people can believe under unfortunate circumstances,…

  • The Host

    The Host

    ★★★★½

A monster movie where everyone - the cast, the government, even the monster itself, is hapless. A testament to the strength born from family and community, the only people who'll have your back when the going gets rough. Symbolically nuanced and emotional to the core, I love it!!!!!!

  • Dragon's Heaven

    Dragon's Heaven

    ★★★★½

Produced with such a radiant devotion to its very clear Moebius and Nausicaa influences that I can't help but fall in love with it. It barely has any characters or a story, but it doesn't matter - characters playfully bounce off each other and keep it engaging by completely removing any sense of melodrama. I can spare 45 minutes for some of the most beautiful animations I've ever seen. Application of colour and hatch shading like this is so unique for an anime.
Those power Armor shoes gonna leave a lasting impression...,

  • Bananaz

    Bananaz

    ★★★★½

Not even going to bother separating my love for this era of Gorillaz and any kind of constructive critique of this movie. Awesome grimy moodboard and a fun look behind the curtain at the two goblins driving the project. Clapped when the cigarette landed in Damon's mouth.

  • Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper

Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper

    ★★★★½

My sister would watch this all the time and I had to pretend it didn't go all kinds of hard. I still know all the songs by heart.
