Obayashi’s movies remind me of when I was a little kid who constantly stayed up all night. In the 80s, you would occasionally turn on the TV in the middle of the night and find some bizarre, kinda creepy shit. Like when we were on trips to Canada or near there, we would stay in hotels that got different stations and shows. I always remember this thing I would find called Weird TV. Some freakish Canadian oddity. I can’t find much information on it. I can’t figure out if it was a multi-episode series or a one time special, but it left a big impression on me.
That’s what Obayashi’s movies feel like to me.
Does he think his films are cute and childish? Because they’re terrifying and perverse. I mean, that’s why I like them, but still.
“Are you afraid of exposing your panty?”
I loved the music and visual style, I just wish I knew what was happening half the time. Something about superpowered kids in a school.
