Austin Burke’s review published on Letterboxd:
A police S.W.A.T. team investigates about a mysterious VHS tape and discovers a sinister cult that has pre-recorded material which uncovers a nightmarish conspiracy.
V/H/S is back, but this time we have a 90’s-heavy throwback that combines numerous elements to create a unique experience. While I have yet to see the one everyone considers to be bad, the first two are solid enough (not even sure if I have rated them on here). 94 not only improves on some of my issues with the others, but it manages to deliver on some of the most unique stories you will see this year. Since this is an anthology film, the stories themselves aren’t always on the consistent quality level that they should be, but there is enough here to draw in newcomers. Storm Drain may be the best example of building tension throughout and delivering on a spine-tingling yet slightly cheesy payoff. This specific payoff had my jaw on the floor, and I loved it.
What stands out about the moment I previously referred to (and numerous moments beyond that) is the use of practical effects here. The budget is clearly lower, but with that comes the mentality of working with what you have. What each Director was able to do with the creature design, level of body Horror, and overall visual gut-punch was impressive. Even if a specific story didn’t have the depth that it needed, it would always do something to unnerve you while staying true to the madness of V/H/S. The weakest of the bunch may be the story that connects each puzzle piece; there is also one that drops the 90’s look (at points), and this almost took me out of it altogether. The filters, effects, and transitions are used to make it atmospheric in a way that I haven’t seen before. Just the VHS trope is fun enough, but the nostalgic touch to this film makes it even more entertaining. If you are a Horror fan who loves wild plots, creepy creatures, or just a ton of madness, this will be the movie for you.
