The Happening

The Happening

Heralded as one of the most legendarily bad movies of all time, I found The Happening to not be very fun or laughable even from a bad movie watching perspective. My reaction was just one of bewilderment, constantly asking myself how this film was made.

The fact of the matter is that the concept of an unseen environmental disaster movie is pretty strong, and this movie doesn't even start out that badly. But as things progress, the worse The Happening becomes because the script to this film is just awful. The characters are not believable and are acted like hunks of driftwood, while the plotting is much too quick to get invested in any of the characters or the situation, and there is pretty much no menace due to how oddly the deaths are shot, which makes practically all of them come off as unintentional comedy.

This is not the worst movie ever made by a long shot, but it is a very confusing one. I just don't understand how anyone could have read through the script and thought they were doing justice to their Body-Snatchers esque idea. The Happening just isn't a good movie, but it's not even notably terrible, just one big misstep that should be skipped unless you are a Shyamalan completionist.
