Feels like 3 hours long so I might be overrating this a tad but I had such a borderline delirious amount of fun so much of the time that it doesn't really matter. jack black movies have been a regular presence since I was a kid watching tenacious d and school of rock and its wild to me that this is... probably? the best direction he's ever been under. Don't have much of a relationship with the other actors in this but they all do a good job and the exchanges between the main characters are so sweet

Surprisingly hit even harder than my Miami vice and heat rewatches from last year. I think I warmed a good bit to smiths performance and formally it's incandescent pretty much front to back, and honestly I think it's the most emotional weight I've felt from the social nexus of a Mann film as wonderful as the character work in his films can be.

    - a masterpiece, and really difficult to discuss coherently, because it's such a purely visceral experience of a film that it evades any real attempts at conceptualizing its essence. when it clicks, its effect can be jaw dropping. artistic intent barely even feels present in terms of how it works and the power it achieves. it feels like it came together through some indifferent, happenstance swirl of elements, like the formation of a storm. it's a summer soaked and grit caked macabre fever dream that just so happens to be constituted by sound design, photography and editing.

this is everything i've ever wanted out of CGI visual worldbuilding. amazing setpieces. direction and pacing are elegant as fuck. absolute plastic-camp-space melodrama-adventure masterpiece. could watch this shit once a week for the rest of my life. legitimately might be in my top 10 movies ever. holy shit.
