In a year where a film was released as Zack Snyder's Justice League, I would say it's wise to call this Denis Villeneuve's Dune (Part 1). The resemblance to his previous work is uncanny, from the descriptive shots to city design and visual storytelling. His interpretation luckily fits perfectly with Frank Herbert's magnum opus. There's room for futuristic and deeper narration through signs, languages and looks. There's an epic scale in the design of the different worlds, Greig Fraser's cinematography…

I didn't think it was possible to dumb down the first movie... Still, it has some magnificent jokes spread out through the three acts. The uniqueness of the first is lost in the sequel, even if there are a few additions that improve the overall enjoyment.

Similarly to the first one, it felt like a long episode plot wise. It felt like they stepped up the flow in the animation, and the artstyle was different, but still good. However, the story seemed to be aiming for higher ends than it actually delivered. It was more difficult to fit it in the main series. The action was the main attraction, with pieces of info dump in between. A pretty standard side story.

Exhilarating from start to finish, thanks for the most part to the animation and designs. The story is simple yet effective and I wasn't bored for a second. For such a short runtime, the characters were distinct and were given some development, even if a couple were a bit basic.
