    tick, tick...BOOM!

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

    i make a vow
    right here and now
    i’m gonna spend
    my time this way

difficult movie to rate because the moments that worked for me, REALLY really really worked for me. but there were far too many elements that were clumsy and uneven and dropped.

to start, i didn’t like the direction. like at all. i thought the cinematography was lazy, and i really disliked the handling of the musical numbers (i’ll get to that). on the positive side,…

can’t believe i’m related to these people.

i am very, very, very frustrated by the way neurotypicals have reduced the controversy around this movie to being about a neurotypical actor playing an autistic character. that isn’t the real issue here. it’s AN issue, but it’s a more complicated one. right now, please stand by is sitting in my top 4, and that’s a movie about an autistic character played by an allistic actor. while i generally think physically disabled characters…

every story has an end. but in life, every ending is a new beginning.

this was really really lovely. brittany murphy was such a phenomenal actress, and a beautiful soul. she and dakota fanning are both so great here!

the story is really sweet. i really appreciate the comedic cinematography in this movie. they frame a lot of the scenes in ways that make the visual gags really effective - you can tell they put thought into it, which isn’t…

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

please, dear God, please hear this prayer: you must protect the people of the valley.

the very first work by studio ghibli establishes a lot of what would later become found in many of their greatest films. courageous & compassionate young heroines, the need to find harmony between humanity and nature, breathtaking animation, & boundless animation- all as present here as they are today.

i will admit i tend to prefer miyazaki’s more intimate films than his epics. but there’s still great beauty and a lot to love in all of his creations, and nausicaä is no exception.

    merry christmas, mitch.

i loved this so so so much. i hope it isn’t the end, but if it is, it’s a worthy conclusion. so much warmth and love infuse every beat, and the only way i could’ve liked it more is if zoey was with simon (i’m sorry but i’ll always lowkey prefer them). it had a carly rae jepson song!!! truly wonderful, and my new holiday favorite 🎄

    The Lost Daughter

sometimes i get scared i can’t take care of them.

of all the debut features i’ve seen this year, gyllenhaal’s searingly complicated exploration of motherhood is the winner.

colman is always perfect, the cast is amazing, and the direction is sublime.

i do wish the past narrative dominated a little less of the screen time. i love parallel narratives as a storytelling device, but this one genuinely may have taken up more than half of the actual film. still, a…
