Attentive to gestures, movement, colours, and (especially) emotions. Where both compassion and brutality come together like a waltz.

A particular passage from Proust stubbornly keeps flashing to mind, and maybe this is the reason why I hold it so dearly:

“The reality that I had known no longer existed...The places we have known do not belong only to the world of space on which we map them for our convenience. They were only a thin slice, held between the contiguous impressions that composed our life at that time; the memory of a particular image is but regret for a particular moment; and houses, roads, avenues are as fugitive, alas, as the years.”

Rented as a form of essay procrastination. I'll come back to write more about this later (it is so many things). Tender, heartbreaking; like the colour blue. Even as one of her more understated works, Denis still hones the mise-en-scène of sensations. A quiet cinema of tactility. The film imbues the spatiality of human relations with images that one could almost touch or feel. So much warmth, and a perfect last shot. It’s a lovely, mysterious, special thing...I cried a lot.

If loving this film had a choreography, I’d dance it to eternity.
