Coming-of-age story of a girl who discovers herself with a few unexpected surprises. Thelma is a strong but understated psychological mystery/thriller with some very powerful imagery. Deftly pokes at themes of repression, faith, tragedy, and eventual self-realization. I love the mood. I was especially entranced by the scene in the theatre during the Philip Glass performance. The film is a truly multi-sensory experience.
