    Some of the film's artsier elements seem superfluous albeit quite pretty in all honesty, but Almodóvar's inimitable command of melodrama shines through here on many occasion. Here, as deftly as he blends comedy and tragedy, he blends the fine line between passion and manic obsession.

    Nobody does it like Ozu. Nobody CAN do it like Ozu. The way he combines light and amusing comedy with aching human melodrama is just masterful, as are the painterly and carefully composed shots in all of his films. Each frame of this is impeccable, the master's idiosyncratic style is done immaculate justice by Asakazu Nakai's vividly colourful and gorgeous cinematography. Those final shots could all be hung on a wall as fine pieces of art.
