Promising Young Woman

Promising Young Woman ★★★★½

Was just gonna write a “Carey fucking Mulligan. That is all.” review here, but actually this film deserves a hell of a lot more than that.

Don’t get me wrong though, Mulligan absolutely crushes here and carries this film with such a raw, tortured and fucking angry performance that is absolutely worthy of every bit of praise she gets and more. You can just feel every ounce of her character’s history beyond the runtime of the film and that’s such an impressive thing. Bo Burnham did an absolutely solid job too, I love that man and it was great to see him give a good performance in such a great film. Alfred Molina shows up too, and when is that ever anything other than great news?

The third act of this just blew me away, the first two were great but when that final act hit I was transfixed, including one long extended shot that had me physically squirming in my seat. This was a film with something to say, and it says it with some real bite and style.

I can definitely see this being a divisive one, with it’s premise and it’s portrayal of men, but if you watch this and feel sympathetic towards any of the male characters by the end, then I don’t know what to tell you. Men like this are far too common in society, and we need to stop defending them, the sooner they are held fully accountable for their actions the better.
