This works on at least five different levels for me: as comedy, as melodrama, as an exploration of what happens after the teen movies he's synonymous with, as an examination of the fragility of masculinity, as American Beauty-esque satire of suburbia... To think it has a reputation as mediocre at best is baffling to me -- this instantly became my favourite Hughes.
Oh what it would be to live in a world where this is unthinkable.
