What a fun film! Very realistic that it takes place in Omaha and one of the characters leaves Nebraska to find happiness/a better life.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the score which I wouldn't listen to on its own, but was very entertaining and fit the movie well.

Chinatown had my attention the whole time and had a fantastic performance by Nicholson and the rest of the cast. I think I need to watch it again for that ending, but everything leading up to it was fantastically enthralling. Goldsmith's score is one of his best, using both that famous, lyrical solo trumpet as well as the dissonant percussion he's famous for in Planet of the Apes.

This is an absolutely brutal watch, yet one I'm sure to recommend time and time again. Other films have made me sad, but this one drains all emotion from me every time I see it. I'm fascinated by the depiction of the Russian front in WWII (a side of the war I, at least, rarely see in film), and the final montage and scene with works by Wagner as well as Mozart's Requiem is haunting beyond measure.

What the hell did I just watch. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves comic sans or would like to see 80-year-old Rodney Dangerfield's butt.
