To be fair, I watched this in a hospital bed the day after surgery (I'm fine) and just wanted to watch something easy, so I might have been in a more generous headspace than I otherwise would have been in...but I didn't think this is half bad. It's also not the best written film ever but it does its job in providing some dazzling visuals and action scenes for breezy entertainment.

I know that it's partially because I waited too long to write this (coming up on 5 months) but I think it's also due to the nature of the film that I'm struggling to write about it in the way that it's hard to talk about an affecting dream you had the night before: so vivid but surreal and half-remembered, like you experienced something momentous but it's difficult to put into words.

Not to be confused with the popular Tora-san comedies. Imagine Boyhood as a documentary and filmed over 22 years instead of 12 years. It's even more incredible than it sounds. This is a little-known film that appears to have been produced for a local Japanese TV network, and it's the best thing I've seen all year.

Tora-san is the patriarch of a family with seven kids, and they start off all living on the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. He…
