A. J. Black’s review published on Letterboxd:
'Nothing happened!' exclaims Mark Wahlberg at one point in The Happening. It's the most accurate, sensible thing he says in 90 minutes of what, surely, has to be M. Night Shyamalan's worst movie.
Wahlberg is utterly miscast, Zooey Deschanel once again proves she's the most irritating, overrated actress on the planet, and as for the story... Night should have plumped for a deadpan, spoof comedy because you're worryingly po-faced if you're not laughing at various points here, especially our characters running in terror from wind. It's almost a shame I know this was meant to be a serious, ecological mystery thriller because had this been played for laughs, it might well have been one of Shyamalan's best. I hope one day he realises he actually, unknowingly, has a gift for comic timing.
For a film called The Happening, it's remarkably without incident. Those bees had the right idea!
