This is far, far better than I remember it being as a kid.
I went into this expecting it, out of memory, to be like the “Full Metal Jacket” of Pixar... In that the first 45 minutes is truly exceptional and everything after that is still pretty good.
But you know what? That would be an insult to one of Pixar’s absolute best films. The entirety of this film is a magical experience, no less than that. This film’s score, visuals, heart, and emotion moves me like no other Pixar film has had. “Define dancing” alone is one of the finest, most beautiful moments in film for the 21st century. Wall-E and Eve are two of the best characters in Pixar history. The Captain is a great character too.
If I had to nitpick, it’s that Auto is a less-than-stellar villain. He’s good, but that’s about it. He’s a significantly worse version of HAL 9000. But otherwise, this movie is perfect.
It deserved it’s win for sure, even though I also adore Kung Fu Panda and I like Bolt.
