Before I pressed play I thought, “Okay movie- show me why you are nominated and Ma Rainey and Soul aren’t.” And it does offer a great argument. I don’t know if it is better than those two, but this is way better than I thought it would. I sort of rolled my eyes when I read the synopsis, another family drama about an ailing old parent, and I don’t think I was wrong to be skeptical there. However, since this is focused from the said parent’s perspective, it has a lot more weight and emotion. There is an episode of Castle Rock that does something similar in less time and perhaps just as well, but I am glad I saw this. I think it had the most emotional reaction for me of the nominees so far.
