    European Cinema Binge #11 (Poland)

    โ€œThe whole countryโ€™s built on corpses.โ€

Marcin Wronaโ€™s Demon is an abstract study on Polish and Jewish relations in a post-war nation still haunted by its fractured past. The director never lived to see his legacy, sadly passing away before his voice could be heard in the realm of art cinema.ย

During a stormy wedding reception in Poland, the groom is followed by a ghostly figure, he has a seizure, and inexplicably begins speaking Yiddish.โ€ฆ

    Is โ€œIโ€™m looking for a college thesis subjectโ€ a horror genre trope?ย

Loosely based on Books of Blood Volume 2 by British author Clive Barker, a sad empath, a cute film student, and an absolute maniac named Quaid (played by Shaun Evans) launch a deeply nonsensical โ€œfear-studyโ€ to examine the emotion of dread.

Quaid is looking for something to unhinge his own sanity; in short, heโ€™s in college, bored, and very psychopathic. He runs aroundโ€ฆ

Dr Deathย is astonishing and left me reeling. There is a type of grief on display here that I found very difficult to detach myself from. Highly recommend for true crime fans and people who liked the podcast.

Phenomenally meta, Resolution hasย just enough self awareness to strike a balance between dropping clues, and leaving room for ambiguity. I get the comparison to Theย Cabin In The Woods but the way in which the film realises its narrative is completely different. A gem everyone should check out before seeingย The Endless (2017).ย

I am convinced this is the most perfect movie I have seen. Dario Argentoโ€™s most celebrated giallo film, Deep Red is an impressive thriller and compelling mystery. It features unsettling scenes and an equally unsettling (yet funky) score from Goblin. Thereโ€™s plenty of gore for traditional horror fans, but thereโ€™s a real story and some interesting themes.ย

Argento has a message about women and family.ย It shines through that a liberated woman can be both badassโ€ฆ

    ๐Ÿ’œ Fear Street Part 1: 1994 ๐Ÿ’œ

Post-production failed this movie for me. The constant, unrelenting score, soundtrack, and according to Netflix captions, โ€œmenacing musicโ€ really took me out of the movie.

There were also several scenes that clearly spliced together multiple takes, with repeated gestures and even mismatched audio. Iโ€™m not even critical about the technical aspects of movies usually, I tend to rate highly, and look more at themes, but these errors just stood out to me. Careless!โ€ฆ
