The Sentinel

The Sentinel ★★★★

"You ever see the movie "The Sentinel," Mr. Peterson? It's about the old guy who owned the apartment, which is kind of like the, uh, gateway to Hell…"

This movie used to scare that SHITE outta me when I was a kid.

So much so that I was certain the old guy who looked like George Burns at the Salvation Army was going to feed me to satanic lesbian ballerinas in a Brooklyn brownstone when my mom would take me along to go bargain hunting.

The Sentinel riffs off of Polanski's 'Apartment Trilogy' and the aptest description of this film would be if Rosemary's Baby and The Tenant had a child and named it Damien Thorn...

While not as technically adept as Polanski's work, this film stands on its own merits.

It's creepy and unsettling.

And if you have the right kind of eyes, it might just roll you up into a bundle of nerves by the time the third act comes hulking up the stairs like a distorted miscreation of the christian god's wrath...
